Making it through the Holidays

I have managed to stay 'in the box' this holiday season.

I started on Halloween, so candy held no appeal as I was so excited about finally starting the program.

My daughter cooked Thanksgiving Dinner at my house, and I was concentrating more on hosting than the food.

The same at Christmas.  I did more cooking, but managed to not be focused on the fact I wasn't eating ham with everyone else.

Now, I am not some paragon of willpower.  My willpower usually consists of good intentions, then impulsive sabotage, and finishes with lame rationalization.

My strategies have included staying full (the whole "more is better" concept), trying some new recipes and asking myself if I really want to go out of the box for some mediocre cheese and crackers.

It also helps that I recognize that every time I have fallen off a program it has started with one impulsive trip through a drive-thru or bakery aisle, or even as simple as eating a kernel of corn.

Then comes the game-playing.  I would wait until I weighed in and hit Burgerville on the way home.  After all, I have a whole week until the next weigh-in right?  Then when a lunch gets catered at work or someone brings in bagels, it is just that much easier to eat off program.

So far, I'm good in the box.

A little over a month in...

I'm down 19.20 lbs and off all of my blood pressure medication.  I feel good and have been getting to the pool 2-3 times a week at LA Fitness.  My physical activity still isn't where it needs to be, but I'm getting there.  I try to make water aerobics and when I can't I run in the pool up and down the swim lane.

I'm enjoying the food still and shakes are fun to flavor with sugar-free fat-free pudding mixes and sugar-free flavored syrups.  Now that I  can have the soup, I have been making it into a gravy and adding it to entrees to change up the flavor and texture.  It is also good just as a nice, hot savory soup.  It is like a creamy chicken bouillon with herbs.

I really enjoy the hot multi-grain cereal, which I have every morning at work.  There are recipes to make muffins and pancakes with the cereal, but it makes such a nice big bowl of hot cereal, I'm not all that tempted to trade it for a low-volume option.

Thanksgiving wasn't as big a challenge as I feared it might be.  I stayed 'in the box' and really didn't feel deprived.  I mean, I've had my mom's devilled eggs hundreds of times, turkey is just turkey and I don't really like pumpkin pie anyway.

It definitely helped that my daughter took over the cooking for the second year.  She is a talented cook and does a wonderful job.

Honestly, there hasn't been much of anything that I have been missing or jonesing for in terms of food.  (Other than I still dream about tater tots.)   I'm sure down the road I will have some struggles, but I think I'm still in the honeymoon phase and am just very pleased that I  am able to lose weight, eat food that isn't horrible (yeah, I'm talking to you Nutrisystem) and feel like I'm not damaging my health in the process.

I have been quantified today.

I wanted to get a baseline of my body composition, how much lean, how much fat.  I know that the handheld body fat testers at LA Fitness never work with someone my size.  I also know that skin fold calipers are completely useless for me.

Hydrostatic weighing is currently the "gold standard" of body composition measuring.

The only place around here is at Portland Adventist.  They charge $60 for the initial measurement and $40 for follow ups.

It was a little freaky, but kind of fun too!

I changed into my swimsuit and the technician led me to a small tiled room with what looked like a tall, rectangular Roman tub.  There was a set of stairs at one end with ladder rungs going down into the water.  She explained that the tub was sunk into the floor, so it was actually deeper than it initially looked.  There was a chair made out of black pipes attached to a scale that hung from the ceiling.

I'm definitely buoyant, so she put a weight belt on me to help get completely submerged.  I had to blow all the air out of my lungs while completely submerged.  After getting the same reading at least 2-3 times I was able to get dressed.

The tech brought out the report and asked what I thought my percentage of fat was.  I said that I thought it was probably 50% or more.  Turns out I was right!.

BMI:  57.3
Percentage body fat:  50.5% (169 lbs fat, 165 lbs lean).
Based on my lean mass, a healthy weight of 22-27% body fat would be 212-226 lbs.
My goal:  180 lbs.

I figure my goal weight is doable since approximately 25% of weight lost will be muscle.

At least I finally have proof that I am "big boned".

I had a really good entrée yesterday.  The HMR Vegetarian Thai Curry with Brown Rice.  So good!  Nice warmth from the curry.  Definitely going to purchase more of that one!

Official Start to first full week

Monday is my night for the medical check in and Core classes.

One of the women I met at the intro class is starting with me, so we will be Core buddies.

I signed in on the check in sheet and turned in my order for food.  Since I had just placed a full order last Thursday, I just picked up another box of Vanilla shakes and 10 more entrees.  I cannot wait to get through the first four weeks so I can add the hot cereal and the soup to my food mix!

The nurse called me back and I could not believe it when I stepped on the scale.  I had lost 9 pounds in 3 days!  Of course, I have been peeing like crazy from all the water I have been drinking, so the loss is mostly water.  I do have to say I feel less bloated, so that is a good thing!

I met with the doctor and she was happy with the weight loss.  She said I should discontinue one of my blood pressure medications, so that is always a good thing.

Our first week of Core was actually the twelfth week of the lessons.  It was about how statistics show that people who have lost 30 or more pounds and have kept it off for five year or more have over 2600 calories of physical activity a week.

How to fit that much time into your schedule?  The PA assignment was to fit one instance of activity during the workday.  That is were those folks are able to get all that PA in every week.  During the week we don't have a lot of time either before or after work, so we need to use our lunch hours to help get to that 2600 level.

The food assignment was to fit a HMR 70 Plus pudding into our food plan today.  I used it as a snack around 3pm.  I have to say, I'm still not all that impressed with the puddings.  I would rather have had a shake as I was super hungry by the time I got home at 6:30pm.

I mixed the HMR Five Bean Casserole and the Chicken with BBQ sauce entrees.  It was very satisfying.

Weekend time!

I definitely do not get up as early on the weekends.  7:30 is sleeping in!

I didn't do a whole lot this weekend, mostly puttering around the house, doing laundry, etc.  Today we are going to organize our storage shed and go see Gone Girl at the movies.

Saturday food:

I made a chocolate peppermint shake for breakfast about 10AM using Da Vinci SF Peppermint Patty syrup.  Cash and Carry is a store that is open to the public, but serves small restaurants, coffee carts, etc. Anyone who needs to purchase food products in commercial sizes.  They have every flavor of coffee syrup under the sun, both regular and sugar free.  I currently have SF French Vanilla, Chocolate, Orange, Huckleberry, Raspberry Peppermint Patty and Pancake (maple flavor).

Around 2PM I made a second shake, this time Chocolate with PB2.

For dinner I combined two entrees:  Mushroom Risotto and Turkey Chili with Beans.

Mushroom Risotto is fine on its own, but it really shines when you add it to another entrée.  The richness of the mushroom elevates the other entrée.  The Turkey Chili is good by itself.  Tasty, but not too spicy for most folks.  I would add more heat myself.  I have always liked to add rice to chili, so the combination of these two entrees give a full bowl of tasty and filling dinner.

For my evening shake I used a Vanilla packet and added a teaspoon of Sugar Free Peach Jell-O powder.  Very nice peach flavor that doesn't overwhelm the vanilla or make it sickly sweet.

I have to say that I am really impressed with how well my Magic Bullet blender has been blending up the shakes and ice cubes.

The last time I was on HMR, I was using my kitchen blender and following the instruction to create these high-volume, fluffy shakes.  Running the blender for the 2-3 minutes suggested was always a headache and I burned through at least 2 blenders due to the wear on the motor. The texture was always a little off-putting.  It was a large, foamy drink that wasn't ever quite cold enough.

Now I blend 8-9 ice cubes with the packets and water and get a tall mug that reminds me of a Wendy's Frosty.  It also only takes approximately 30 seconds which I'm sure my husband appreciates.

For Sunday I am going to follow the minimum prescription, 3 shakes and 2 entrees.

Breakfast was a vanilla shake with PB2.

For Lunch I had the Mexican Enchiladas.  It tasted more Italian than Mexican and the flour tortillas had the same consistency as the pasta in many of the entrees.  Still pretty darn tasty though.

My afternoon snack was a chocolate shake with Peppermint Patty SF syrup.

For Dinner I had the Vegetable Beef Stew.  Good beef flavor in the sauce and the vegetables were not too mushy in texture.

I'm rounding out the night with a vanilla shake with Huckleberry syrup.  Should be yummy!

We say "Gone Girl" today.  I hadn't read the book so I was totally surprised by some of the twists.  Ben Affleck did a wonderful job and Rosamond Pike was amazing.

Tomorrow is Monday again and my first "Core" class.

Day One, In the Box

Today was my 'strong start' day (first day after a meeting).

I actually felt pretty good, no headaches or hunger pains.

I ate 4 shakes and 2 entrees for approximately 1200 calories.  Plenty of protein (over 100 grams) so it makes sense I didn't feel hungry.

Drinking the shake for a snack mid afternoon was a really good idea.  By the time I got around to dinner tonight it was 7pm and I would have been super cranky if the last time I  had eaten was 11AM.

Morning and Night shakes are done in my Magic Bullet blender with lots of ice.  I also add 2 teaspoons of Benefiber, and take my HMR multivitamin and a Actigall capsule.  I used Vanilla 800 shakes for the blended ones and Chocolate at the office.  I also added 1 Tablespoon of PB2 (powdered peanut butter) to my evening shake.  Yummy!

Lunch:  HMR Beef Stroganoff with Noodles.  Surprisingly tasty.  I was afraid it would be either bland or too salty.  There was a definite hint of Worcestershire in the sauce.  Noodle were a little mushy, but I wasn't expecting just-out-of-the-pot al dente.  Overall a keeper.

Dinner:  HMR Lasagna with Meat Sauce.  I remember this from my last time on HMR.  Nice flavors with spinach in the filling and a definite meat sauce taste.  I cut it up into squares after heating and mix it all up in a bowl.  Glad to see it hasn't changed much!

Tonight is Halloween.  We never get trick-or-treaters as our street has no lights or sidewalks.  We just keep the lights off and basically hide.  However that also means we don't have candy hanging around, so that is a bonus!

Introduction Meeting

Today was the Introduction Meeting for the beginning of my program with the HMR Diet.  The next 12 weeks will be the "Core" meetings where we learn how to make this diet work for us.

I'm on the 'Decision Free" program, which means no outside food.  My minimum 'prescription' is 3 shakes and 2 entrees a day.  They highly recommend (and patient data supports) that 1-2 more shakes/entrees are eaten a day for best weight loss.

I'm so tired of food.  I'm tired of trying to figure out what to buy, what to cook, what to eat.  Since my husband is home earlier than me and totally capable of cooking for himself, I don't feel the least bit guilty about opting out of the whole cooking game.

So the food plan:
5:00 AM  Coffee with part of a vanilla shake for creamer
5:30 AM  Breakfast:  Full shake blended for maximum volume
8:30 AM  Second Breakfast: (yeah, I'm a Hobbit!) Shake in shaker bottle (after four weeks I can substitute the hot cereal for a shake and I'll use that for my 'work breakfast')
11:00 AM Lunch:  Hot Entrée
3:00 PM  Afternoon Snack: Shake in shaker bottle
6:30 PM Dinner:  Hot Entrée
8:00 PM Snack:  Full shake blended for maximum volume.

Miscellaneous water, diet soda during the day.

The idea is to not have too many hours between meals/snacks.  Many programs suggest 6 or so smaller meals versus 3 big ones, so this eating plan certainly supports that.

So yes, I have been here before.  The difference this time is that I have nowhere left to go.  My slipped band and emergency removal makes a gastric bypass too dangerous for me to consider.  I will drink the kool-aid here and will make this work.

Counting down....

In two days I start my medically-supervised weight loss program (HMR Diet) which is run by one of our local hospitals.  I actually have been on this same program before, but didn't take it very seriously.  I was getting my lap-band and I was never going to have to diet again and I would magically become a 'normal' weight.

Um, not so much.

I did get the lap-band and after a couple of years my stomach tried to turn itself inside out.  Major band slip.  I had to have an emergency removal of the band and, of course, all the weight came back.   Hey, I could eat bagels again without "getting stuck" and tossing them right back up!

I am now currently the highest weight I have ever been, and my body is telling me all about it.

Not just the normal fat-girl problems, such as finding clothes that are somewhat flattering and not liking stairs or chairs with arms.  I would not fly on a plane right now even if my life depended on it.  I always have to ask for a table at a restaurant, rather than a booth.

My knees and ankles are always sore and clicking when I  walk.  In fact, I fear I am walking like the Mondoshawans on Fifth Element.  More of a trundle than a walk.  Very depressing considering I was a belly dancer for years and even heavy, I was graceful.  If I don't get this weight off I know I am looking at a knee replacement or two in my future.

My neck has filled out to meet my chin.  Not a great look.  Not as bad as Honey Boo-Boo's child molester dating mother, June, but bad enough.

I cannot 'reach' everything that needs to be reached.  I have to become a contortionist in the bathroom and have actually gotten muscle cramps just attending to basic body hygiene.  I always look for the handicapped stall in a public bathroom as I need enough room to get between my legs as my thighs are huge.

And speaking of hygiene, having parts of your body constantly pressing against other parts is not good for your skin.  Skin needs air to breathe and stay dry.  I have rolls at the back of my waist that I can always feel as they have folded over to touch.  I have notice the start of skin breakdown under my belly, especially where my C-section scar is.

I see a mommy-makeover in my future with a breast lift (or maybe augment depending on how flat I get), tummy tuck and mons lift.

Rolling over at night is especially fun.  I have to lever myself up on an elbow to make sure I spin in place.  Rolling would actually take up too much space and I would be pushing my husband off the bed.  Somehow I strained a groin muscle leveraging myself around.  I'm scared to death I might have actually caused a hernia.

Amazingly, I'm healthy otherwise.  I had to have a bunch of blood work done to start the program and my cholesterol is 155, I don't have diabetes and my thyroid is just fine.  I have some high blood pressure that is controlled with mild medication.  I also was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was going for the lap-band and do use a CPAP machine at night.

I love my CPAP, and I love not waking up my spouse, or myself with snoring!

October 30, 2014 is my intake appointment.  I am going on the "Decision Free" program which consists of three shakes and two entrees (at a minimum).  I will be picking up my first week's food at that appointment and will start the program on Halloween.  There are weekly classes (behavioral and lifestyle change) and weekly medical monitoring (for the first month, then I go to monthly as I have so few co-morbidities).

I cannot wait.  October 31st cannot come soon enough.  Next year I want to be something cuter for Halloween than a Mondoshawan.

Why Venus?

There have been many images of Venus, from Willendorf to Botticelli and beyond.  I don't need to be the Venus of the computer age, but I would like to be more Botticelli  than Willendorf.
